The solution was to install Gnumeric and load and save the spreadsheet which removes some (presumably broken) OpenOffice metadata from the file.
sudo apt-get install gnumeric

# Open spreadsheet in Gnumeric

# Save without changing

# Reopen in OpenOffice calc and the problem should be gone
